Two Augustinians Make their Final Vows
In Europe, young men making their final commitment to religious life has become a rarity. But on Sunday, 27 September 2020, in the Augustinian Church of the Holy Trinity in Viterbo, Italy, with its restrained but beautiful baroque interior, Giuseppe Arippa (40) and Mattia Filippi (26) made their Solemn Vows before the Prior General, Fr Alejandro Moral Anton OSA. In his homily, the Provincial of the Italian Province, Fr Giustino Cascino OSA, told them and their families that this was their 'marriage ceremony', in which the perpetual commitment to Christ as Augustinian friars was to be seen as the equivalent of marriage vows. It was a striking comparison. An enthusiastic choir backed by a violin played by a Slovakian student friar, guitar and drums, provided the musical accompaniment to a moving ceremony, the visual highpoint of which was the prostration of the two men in front of the Prior General. Having completed their theological studies for priesthood, Giuseppe and Mattia will do further studies in Rome, Giuseppe at the Salesianum, Mattia at the Jesuit-run Gregorian University. The next stage for both of them is ordination to the diaconate and then priesthood. The Italian Province has 121 members, with overseas missions in the Peruvian Andes and Slovakia.
