Conference - October 24th - "Why can't we stop pretending law has anything to do with justi

The 12th RICHARD O'SULLIVAN MEMORIAL LECTURE:

David McIlroy, Barrister Visiting Professor in Law, CCLS, Queen Mary University of London

"Why can't we stop pretending law has anything to do with justice?":

A Critical Theory of Natural Law

Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Charles Clore House, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5DR

24th October 2019, 6.30pm Light refreshments from 5.45pm

In this lecture, Professor McIlroy, author of The End of Law: How Law's Claims relate to Law's Aims (Edward Elgar, 2019), will explore why law and justice cannot be divorced and yet remain forever at a distance from one another.

Although the legal positivists regarded natural law theories as giving too great a reverence to law's claims, Augustine of Hippo used the idea of the natural law to offer a sharp critique of the legal systems of their day. Such a natural law theory can expose where the justifications for laws and legal systems fail in their own terms, where they do not take account of the injustice to those not treated as their subjects, and where they offer false visions of reality.

There is no charge for this event but donations towards the cost will be gladly accepted on the night. It would help with catering if those attending could notify the trust in advance on: editor@lawandjustice.org.uk

Law & Justice is a peer reviewed journal published by the Edmund Plowden Trust for the purpose of assisting and promoting the study and understanding of the law of this country (UK) and its legal systems in themselves and by comparing them with the laws and systems of other countries and by considering them in the light of Christian sources such as The Declaration of Religious Freedom (of the Second Vatican Council), International Law, Canon Law and the Law of Nature.

The online Case Index is a particularly valuable resource to scholars working in the field of law and religion. Abstracts of recent journal articles are also available online.

In addition to publishing "Law & Justice" the Trust holds the Richard O'Sullivan Memorial Lecture, when a distinguished lawyer speaks on a topic concerned with Law and Christian values.
