The Meaning of Life

I recall my earliest days pondering about life and its meaning. Where have we come from and where are we going? What is life all about?

There are different answers given by people. Some see life as just passing through and then dying, ceasing to exist and that is it. Various philosophers down through the centuries have seen a purpose and reason for our existence while some have seen life as meaningless and without a purpose. Today we are told that 90% of people believe in an after-life.

That does not surprise me because of my Christian belief. St Augustine back in the fourth century said, ‘you have made us for yourself, O Lord and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.’

We all desire peace, inner peace, that knowledge and awareness that we are accepted and loved, loved by God, forgiven by Him for our sins and failings. The disciples of Jesus were upset when he spoke about his dying and leaving them but he said to them, ‘I am going ahead of you to prepare a place for you and after I have gone and prepared a place for you, I will return to take you with me so that where I am you may be too.’

Jesus died and rose again, went to a new life, a life without pain, suffering and death, a life beyond the grave where there is perfect peace and fulfilment. Life is more than 50, 70 or more years on this earth. It is life without end, in the presence of God.

Of course there are those who doubt this because we believe in One whom we cannot see or hear or touch or feel in the way we can see each other. We accept this in faith, because Christ said so. He did miraculous things while on earth and when people doubted him, he said, if you cannot believe me believe in the things I do.
